Super Mario Run Review

Super Mario Run successfully translates the magic of a classic Mario game into a format designed for one-handed play. The game cleverly adapts the beloved platforming formula into an auto-runner, where Mario moves forward automatically. This creates an experience that is both familiar to long-time fans and perfectly suited for playing in short bursts. The core objective remains timeless—run and jump through vibrant levels to rescue Princess Peach—but the streamlined controls give the game its own unique identity and challenge.

Gameplay

Gameplay in Super Mario Run is centered on timing and precision. With Mario running automatically, the player’s role is to control his jumps. A simple tap executes a small hop, while a longer press results in a higher, more extended jump. This control scheme is deceptively deep, allowing players to vault over small enemies, stomp on Goombas, wall-jump up shafts, and grab onto ledges. Mastering the nuances of the tap is key to navigating the intricate level designs.

The primary goal in each level is to reach the flagpole at the end, but the real challenge and replayability come from collecting the five special colored coins scattered throughout each stage. Getting the initial set of pink coins is an accessible challenge, but collecting the subsequent, harder-to-reach purple and black coins requires a deep understanding of the level layout and Mario’s abilities. Success is not just about finishing, but about doing so with style and efficiency.

Beyond the main “World Tour” mode, the “Toad Rally” mode offers a compelling competitive experience. Here, players compete against the ghost runs of others in a race to see who can collect more coins and impress more Toads with stylish moves. The Toads that players attract can then be used in the “Kingdom Builder” mode to purchase buildings and decorations, allowing for the creation of a personalized Mushroom Kingdom. This blend of classic platforming, competitive racing, and creative customization makes Super Mario Run a polished and highly engaging experience.
